Dinner at Pronto, The Italian Restaurant We’ll Definitely Be Going Back To

Some restaurants are trendy for a few months, while others quietly become institutions. Pronto falls firmly into the second category.

Tucked away in Craighall Park, this Johannesburg favourite has been serving authentic Italian food for years, and after finally sitting down for dinner there last night, we completely understand why it’s built such a loyal following.

From the moment we walked in, the restaurant felt warm and welcoming. The staff greeted us with genuine smiles, the service was relaxed without ever being slow, and it immediately felt like the kind of place where you could happily spend an entire evening catching up with friends or celebrating something special.

By the end of the night, we were already planning what we’d order on our next visit.

Starting the Evening

There’s something about warm bread arriving at the table that instantly makes you feel at home.

We kicked things off with the Focaccia Bianco, topped with roasted garlic, olive oil and mozzarella. It was simple, fresh and disappeared far quicker than we’d like to admit.

Alongside it came the Caprese Salad, a combination of juicy tomatoes, creamy bocconcini mozzarella, basil leaves and pesto. Light, fresh and full of flavour, it balanced the richer dishes that were still to come.

Both starters were exactly what you’d hope for from a good Italian restaurant.

The Dish That Stole the Show

Then the Fiery Prawns with Spaghetti arrived.

You know a dish is good when conversation around the table suddenly stops.

The prawns were perfectly cooked, the garlic and olive oil brought everything together beautifully, and the chilli added just enough heat without overpowering the seafood. Every bite was packed with flavour, and before long we were wondering why we’d never ordered this dish before.

If you’re visiting Pronto for the first time, this is the one we’d tell you not to miss.

A Pasta We’d Order Again Tomorrow

As good as the prawns were, the Chicken Basil Pesto Linguine gave them some serious competition.

Rich, creamy and full of fresh basil flavour, it was everything you want from a comforting bowl of pasta. The roasted chicken was tender, the pesto tasted fresh rather than heavy, and the whole dish felt beautifully balanced.

It’s the sort of meal that reminds you why simple Italian cooking is often the best.

Another easy 10/10.

Everything Else Was Solid

Not every dish has to be the star of the evening, and that’s perfectly okay.

The Fettuccine Alfredo with Ham was creamy, comforting and generous with the cheese, exactly what you’d expect from a classic Alfredo.

The Beef Fillet Al Funghi was cooked beautifully and paired with a rich mushroom and truffle sauce that worked really well together.

To finish, we shared the Hot Chocolate Fondant, and it was everything a chocolate dessert should be, warm, rich and perfectly matched with homemade vanilla ice cream.

While these dishes didn’t quite steal the spotlight like the two pasta dishes did, they were all consistently enjoyable and rounded off a really satisfying meal.

Service Makes All the Difference

Good food brings people through the door, but great service is what makes you want to come back.

Every member of the team made us feel welcome throughout the evening. Our meals arrived at a comfortable pace, our glasses were never empty for long, and nothing ever felt rushed.

It’s the kind of service that lets you relax and simply enjoy your evening.

Would We Go Back?

Absolutely.

Johannesburg has no shortage of Italian restaurants, but Pronto manages to stand out by doing the basics exceptionally well. Great food, friendly service, generous portions and a relaxed atmosphere are a combination that’s hard to beat.

The Fiery Prawns with Spaghetti and the Chicken Basil Pesto Linguine are two dishes we’ll genuinely be thinking about for a while, and they’re reason enough on their own to return.

If you’re looking for a reliable date night spot, somewhere to celebrate with family, or simply craving really good Italian food, Pronto deserves a place on your list.
