There are few things better than celebrating a birthday with good food, great company and uninterrupted ocean views, and my birthday lunch at Bel Punto delivered exactly that. I spent the afternoon here with nine friends, soaking up the coastal atmosphere and indulging in a seafood feast that reminded me why this spot remains a Durban favourite.
From the moment we sat down, the setting set the tone. The restaurant overlooks the ocean, offering beautiful sea views that instantly put you in a celebratory, relaxed mood. It is the kind of place where lunch naturally turns into a long, indulgent affair, especially when cocktails start flowing.

The Food, Fresh, Flavourful and Worth the Hype
The food was a solid 8/10, with freshness and flavour shining through across the table. We went all in on seafood, starting with oysters, mussels, prawns, line fish and calamari, all prepared beautifully and packed with flavour.

Some standout dishes from our order included:
The Bel Punto Pasta, loaded with prawns, mussels and calamari, finished with cream, garlic, white wine and chilli, rich, comforting and perfectly balanced.
The Pollo alla Diavola, a baby chicken grilled in the woodfire oven with chilli, garlic and fresh herbs, juicy, smoky and full of bold flavour.

The Gamberi alla Griglia, eight butterflied queen prawns grilled with fresh garlic and parsley, simple, fresh and expertly cooked.
The Falklands calamari tubes and legs, grilled with garlic, parsley and fresh lemon, tender, flavourful and a definite crowd favourite.
Every dish tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared, making it easy to keep ordering and sharing plates around the table.

Cocktails, Views and Atmosphere
The cocktails were refreshing and well made, ideal for a birthday celebration and perfect alongside seafood. Paired with the 10/10 ocean views, the overall atmosphere felt special without being pretentious, exactly what you want for a relaxed but memorable lunch.
Service, Friendly but Slow
The waiters and manager were genuinely friendly and welcoming, which always goes a long way. However, service time was on the slower side, with food and drinks taking a while to arrive. While this seems to be a common experience across many Durban restaurants, it can sometimes affect the momentum of a meal and even your appetite.

Final Verdict
Food: 8/10
Service: 6/10
Views: 10/10
Bel Punto is a great choice for a special occasion lunch, especially if you love seafood and value atmosphere just as much as what is on your plate. Go with good company, a bit of patience and plenty of time, and you will leave happy, well fed and already planning your next visit.
