Sip the Sea: Vergenoegd Löw’s Bold New Chapter in Stellenbosch by the Sea

Imagine a place where ocean breezes flirt with vineyard vines and centuries-old Cape Dutch charm meets next-generation winemaking. Welcome to Vergenoegd Löw, the revitalized wine estate just 5 km from False Bay, affectionately dubbed Stellenbosch by the Sea. And yes, the wines taste just as dreamy as they sound.

Since its transformation began in 2015 under German entrepreneur and heritage visionary Prof Dr Dr Peter Löw, Vergenoegd Löw has been making serious waves in the wine world. Think new vineyards, restored 18th-century architecture, regenerative farming (with ducks and Dexter cows, no less) and a team of passionate wine pros steering the ship

🌬️ Merroir, Not Terroir

Here, the sea isn’t just a pretty backdrop — it’s part of the story. Ocean breezes cool the vines by up to 3°C, slowing ripening and building intensity, freshness and a signature touch of coastal salinity. MD and vineyard veteran Corius Visser calls it “merroir” to highlight the sea’s unmistakable imprint on their wines.

You’ll find Bordeaux-style Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc alongside elegant, limestone-loving Chardonnay. These wines carry whispers of sea mist and sun-warmed soil, layered with complexity and freshness.

🌱 Nature First Farming

Vergenoegd Löw is all about harmony with nature. With geese, sheep, chickens and a very photogenic herd of Dexter cattle roaming the farm, it’s a living, breathing example of regenerative agriculture. And yes, the famous Indian Runner ducks are still patrolling the vines, keeping pests in check since 1984

Their approach to “farming with nature” has boosted soil health, biodiversity and grape quality. Since 2022, each vintage has shown growing energy, balance and expression.

🍇 Meet the Makers

Leading the winemaking charge is Vusi Dalicuba, a rising star in the South African wine scene. Mentored by the legendary Abrie Beeslaar, Vusi brings fresh talent, innovation and passion to every vintage. His recent recognition in Winemag’s 2024 Next Generation Awards and Decanter’s “Winemakers to Watch” list speaks volumes

“We follow the grapes,” says Visser. With such detailed viticulture, the cellar takes a low-intervention approach — letting the fruit shine naturally.

🍴 Taste, Stay, Indulge
