This recipe keeps things simple, budget-friendly and proudly Mzansi, using pantry staples like Mrs Balls Chutney, Wellington’s Tomato Sauce and Ina Paarman stock. It is the perfect dinner for busy weekdays, chilly evenings, weekend family meals, or when you want a wholesome dish that stretches beautifully without breaking the budget.

Ingredients
For the mince filling:

500g beef mince

1 large onion, diced

2 carrots, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, crushed

2 tbsp Robertsons Mixed Herbs

1 tbsp Ina Paarman Beef Stock Powder

2 tbsp Wellington’s Tomato Sauce
-
1 tbsp Mrs Balls Chutney (non-negotiable)
-
1 tbsp Worcester sauce
-
2 tbsp tomato paste
-
1 can Koo Chopped Tomatoes (optional but recommended)

Salt & pepper to taste

Olive oil or Sunfoil for frying
For the mash topping:

5–6 potatoes, peeled & cubed

2 tbsp butter
-
½ cup milk
-
1 egg yolk (for extra colour and shine)

Salt to taste
-
Handful of grated Cheddar or Gouda (optional — but if you know, you know)
Method
Prep the Mash
Boil potatoes in salted water until soft.
Mash with butter and milk until creamy.
Season with salt.
Stir in cheese if using.
Mix in an egg yolk — trust the process, it gives that gorgeous golden top!
Make the Sauce
Fry onions, garlic and carrots in oil until soft.
Add mince and cook until browned.
Stir in herbs, stock, tomato sauce, chutney, Worcester sauce and tomato paste.
Add canned tomatoes if you like a saucier base.
Simmer for 10–15 minutes until rich and thick.
Assemble & Bake
Spread mince in a casserole dish.
Top with mashed potato.
Use a fork to create ridges (secret to a crispy top!).
Bake at 200°C for 20–25 minutes or until beautifully golden.
