A Taste of France in Joburg: Meet Le Manoir, Northcliff’s New Luxury Escape

You don’t need a flight to Paris or a trip to the Cape Winelands for a little luxury. Johannesburg has a beautiful new escape, and it comes with French-inspired elegance, gorgeous gardens, luxurious suites and some seriously exciting food.

The iconic Morrells Boutique Estate in Northcliff has officially entered a new era as Le Manoir, bringing a fresh take on one of Joburg’s best-known hospitality destinations.

Under new ownership, the historic property has been transformed into a luxury boutique hotel, events venue and dining destination, while keeping the romantic charm and character that made the original estate so special.

A Little Escape in the Middle of Joburg

Hidden amongst beautifully landscaped gardens, Le Manoir feels worlds away from the rush of Johannesburg.

The property blends contemporary luxury with classic French-inspired design, creating a space that works just as beautifully for a romantic weekend away as it does for a long lunch, business retreat or special celebration.

And if you’re tempted to turn dinner into a staycation, there are just 13 individually designed suites, giving the hotel an intimate, exclusive feel. Each has its own personality, from the stately Provençale Suite to the elegant Terracotta Room, combining old-world character with modern comfort.

The Real Reason Foodies Should Pay Attention: Restaurant 197

Now, let’s talk about the food. 👀

At the heart of Le Manoir is Restaurant 197, where Executive Chef Kagiso “Ken” Phuduhudu is working alongside internationally acclaimed Michelin-starred chef Keigo Kemora to bring a new French-inspired dining experience to Johannesburg.

The philosophy is beautifully simple: take consciously sourced South African ingredients and elevate them using refined French techniques, creativity and seasonality.

Chef Ken is known for modern cuisine, artistic plating and creating dining experiences that go beyond simply putting good food on a plate. Together with Chef Keigo, the team has created menus that celebrate local ingredients while giving classic French gastronomy a contemporary South African twist.

In other words, French technique meets local flavour, and we are very interested.

Breakfast, Long Lunches & Romantic Dinners

Restaurant 197 isn’t only about special-occasion dinners.

Guests can visit for elegant breakfasts, sophisticated business lunches and intimate evening dining, with curated wine experiences and seasonal garden soirées adding even more reasons to return.

And, naturally, there’s wine.

Le Manoir has partnered with leading Cape Winelands estates to build a carefully curated wine list showcasing exceptional South African wines alongside selected international labels, with each chosen to complement Restaurant 197’s evolving menu.

A long lunch in the gardens with a bottle of South African wine? Say less.

Weddings, Celebrations & Events

If you’re looking for somewhere beautiful to celebrate, Le Manoir is also positioning itself as one of Joburg’s more distinctive event destinations.

Between the elegant interiors, picturesque gardens and intimate setting, the property can host weddings, milestone birthdays, private celebrations and sophisticated corporate events, with experiences tailored around each occasion.

One for the Joburg Bucket List

What makes Le Manoir particularly exciting is that you don’t necessarily need to book a weekend away to experience it.

You can come for breakfast, settle in for a long lunch, plan a romantic dinner, attend a garden soirée, celebrate something special — or simply use dinner as an excuse to book one of those gorgeous suites afterwards.

Le Manoir brings together the things we love most: beautiful spaces, great food, South African wine and just enough French sophistication to make an ordinary weekend feel like an occasion.

And the best part? It’s all right here in Johannesburg.

Definitely one to add to the Joburg food and staycation list.
