Good food, refreshing drinks and one of the best toasties I’ve had in ages!
Some days, all you need is good food, a refreshing drink and a beautiful spot to escape the Johannesburg heat. And on one particularly scorching afternoon, Salvation Café at Nine Yards turned out to be exactly what we needed.
If you’re anything like me, you appreciate a restaurant that gets the simple things right. Fresh ingredients, generous portions, delicious flavours and service that makes you feel genuinely welcome. Salvation Café ticked all those boxes.
The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, making it the perfect place to settle in, catch up with a friend and enjoy a leisurely lunch. No rushing, no fuss, just good food and good company.
Let’s Talk Food, Because This Lunch Was a Winner!
We ordered three dishes, and each one brought something special to the table. From a seriously impressive burger to a refreshing salmon bagel and a toastie that completely stole my heart, there was plenty to love.
Salvation Gourmet Burger
Sometimes you just need a proper burger, and Salvation Café certainly knows how to make one!
The Salvation Gourmet Burger arrived stacked with a juicy beef patty, crispy bacon, caramelised onions, guacamole, burger mayo and cheddar cheese, with a serving of fries on the side.
The beef was cooked to perfection, the ingredients tasted incredibly fresh, and every bite delivered a delicious combination of flavours. The creamy guacamole and sweetness from the caramelised onions worked beautifully with the savoury bacon and cheese.
It’s a generous, satisfying burger that doesn’t disappoint. Definitely one for the burger lovers!

Caprese Toastie, The Star of the Show!
Now, this is where things got really exciting!
I’m not exaggerating when I say this was one of the best toasties I’ve had in a very long time.
The Caprese Toastie is made with golden, toasted ciabatta filled with cheddar cheese, garlic-marinated tomatoes and basil, served with a sweet chilli dipping sauce.
The bread was beautifully toasted, with that irresistible golden crust, while the cheesy filling and garlic-marinated tomatoes brought everything together.
And that sweet chilli dipping sauce? The perfect finishing touch!
It’s amazing how something as simple as a toasted sandwich can be so incredibly delicious when it’s done properly.
If you visit Salvation Café, do yourself a favour and order this toastie. You can thank me later!

Salmon Bagel, Fresh, Light and Refreshing
On a hot Johannesburg afternoon, sometimes you want something that feels a little lighter without compromising on flavour.
Enter the Salmon Bagel, a refreshing combination of salmon, cream cheese, pickled red onions, capers and lemon.
Beautifully presented and packed with fresh ingredients, this was such a lovely dish. The cream cheese added richness, the pickled onions brought a delicious tanginess, and the capers and lemon gave everything that fresh, zesty finish.
It was light, flavourful and satisfying, exactly what you want when the summer heat is doing the most!

A Little Something Bubbly
Of course, a relaxed lunch wouldn’t be complete without something refreshing to sip on.
We enjoyed a couple of beautifully chilled, bubbly drinks, the perfect accompaniment to a sunny afternoon. There’s something about sitting back with a sparkling drink, enjoying good food and forgetting about your to-do list for a little while.
Sometimes those are the best afternoons.

Great Service Deserves a Special Mention
One thing I always appreciate when dining out is genuinely good service, and Jack Mabaso deserves a special shoutout.
Jack looked after us wonderfully throughout our visit. He was friendly, attentive and welcoming, making the entire experience even more enjoyable.
It’s often the little things that turn a good restaurant visit into a memorable one, and excellent service certainly makes a difference.
The Verdict, Would I Go Back?
Absolutely, without hesitation!
Salvation Café at Nine Yards is one of those lovely Johannesburg spots that reminds you why going out for a simple lunch can be such a treat.
The food was fresh and full of flavour, the setting was relaxing, and the service was fantastic.
The burger was delicious, the salmon bagel was wonderfully refreshing, but if I had to pick one dish to return for, it would have to be that incredible Caprese Toastie.
Whether you’re planning a catch-up with friends, a casual lunch date or simply looking for somewhere to escape the Johannesburg heat, Salvation Café is definitely worth adding to your list.
My recommendation? Go hungry, order the toastie and take your time enjoying the afternoon.
