How To Spend A Day Out At Anthonij Rupert Wine Estate

If you have ever been to the Western Cape, then you will know that there are numerous wineries in every corner of the province to be explored. Some are more exciting than others and then some are just out of this world magnificent. This past weekend we got invited to explore one of the more exciting and out of this world wine farms, the serene Anthonij Rupert Wine Estate for a day. Its incomparable beauty couples seamlessly with generations of passion that has created some of the world’s best wines.

Our day visit started with an exquisite L’Ormarins MCC & Nougat pairing. I must say the team at Anthonij Rupert really know how to make a huge first impression (big smiles, friendly service and lots of laughs) . Our tasting was set out on the terrace offering beautiful views of the surrounding estate grounds. We were treated to a tasting of the L’Ormarins Blanc de Blancs, which was my favourite bubbly of the day, the zesty lemon aromas and the faint hint of caramel had me all kinds of excited. We also tasted the L’Ormarins Brut Rose which was a winner with everyone else, I guess the gentle berry notes on the nose with a slight cream and biscuit nuance was a perfect balance with the nougat. We ended the pairing with the L’Ormarins Brut Classique, it’s light, refreshing and has a crisp crunch of acidity to balance the ripe fruitiness. When it comes to the nougat for someone who does not have a sweet tooth I really enjoyed the different fruity and nutty flavours in each and I was even happier to find out that they are hand made locally.

Once we were done with the pairing we got treated to a tram ride (this is a great way to take in the entire wine estate’s beautiful mountain and lake views) to to the Motor Museum. I won’t lie I was not expecting to see such an extensive and expensive car collection. I think I am still in awe even now and I am not even a motor head, the collection is just out of this world, PRICELESS! Car fanatics this museum will have you in your feelings for days. I honestly still can’t believe I got to explore a Gold Plated McLaren that is worth £20 million. The full collection boast 320 cars, everything you can ever imagine car wise the motor museum has it. After the visit to the Motor Museum I was feeling so overwhelmed I just had to take a break (I think I called my dad and brother to tell them about what I just saw, they still don’t believe me lol, I can’t wait to take them for a visit soon ) before we headed to our final activity of the day. We ended what was a monumentally exciting day with a delectable Shiraz & Charcuterie pairing a culinary match made in heaven. For the pairing we tried the Anthonij Rupert Syrah, the Cape of Good Hope Riebeeksrivier Shiraz and Protea Shiraz all beautiful blends, we enjoyed them so much we ended up buying a few bottles to take home. After the pairing we decided stay a little longer and have a light lunch while trying out more of the Protea wines. To read all about our lunch visit Lamb Loves Thyme for the full review.

The Anthonij Rupert Wine Estate is definitely one of the best and well worth a visit. For your visit try and experience the Nougat and MCC pairing (R60 per person), do a guided visit to the Motor Museum and then treat yourself to a Shiraz and Charcuterie pairing (R120 per person) or a Italian Cheese and Wine Tasting (R90 per person).  The greatest experience I have personally had in a long time and best of all it’s super affordable!
