Celebrating MySchool 21 Years Of Giving Back With Rays Of Hope

The MySchool – MyVillage – MyPlanet community loyalty programme is celebrating 21 years of giving back. In celebration of its 21st anniversary MySchool has launched the ‘21 years of Giving Back’ campaign which will see R2.1 million donated to 21 causes across South Africa. These 21 causes will be chosen from a selection of nominations made by you the supports of goodwill. Each supporter has until the end of February 2019 to nominate a cause they support from the My School Beneficiary list.

In May, 21 winning beneficiary organisations will be chosen from the list of nominations to each receive R100 000, and the supporters who nominated them will each receive a R1 000 Woolies Gift card.

When My School asked me to be a part of the celebration and select an organisation to support, my first choice without a doubt was Rays of Hope. Rays of Hope is a non-profit organisation which manages a large number of social outreach projects in Alexandra Township in northern Johannesburg.  The organisation aims to enable individuals and families with skills to improve all aspects of their lives, thereby creating a lasting impact on the broader Alex residential community.

The organisation has three main pillars of focus:

Orphaned and Vulnerable – we walk alongside to bring hope and dignity through nurturing and equipping.

Education – we bridge educational gaps through thoughtful and purposeful intervention.

Work Readiness – we unlock economic potential via life skills training, learnerships, technical skills and mentoring.

This Saturday I got to spend the day volunteering at the Rays of Hope Rose Act Saturday School, which every Saturday caters to close to 300 young people in grades 4 – 9 at the Central Johannesburg College, Alexandra Campus for extra Mathematics and English classes. All classes are taught by an army of trained volunteers. Rose-Act also then provides top students with social and spiritual enrichment through holiday clubs, an annual camp and extra mural activities, including drama, chess, spelling bees and general knowledge quizzes. All of these activities positively impact the children’s well-being as well as their academic results.

The MySchool 21st anniversary is a great opportunity for supporters to spotlight their community heroes and give them a chance to win R100 000 towards the continuation of their important work within communities. So, guys make sure you go and nominate your organisation of choice as a matter of urgency today before the closing date. That R100 000 can make a considerable difference, don’t be shy to join me in being part of the active citizenship our country needs.
